Just before a massive clearance from the north the beautifully restored Jones Goods surmounts Beattock with a railtour returning to Glasgow from Dumfries via the now long closed branch to Lockerbie(reversal) .
This was the very first time I met Jimmy. His dad had taken him in his pram to see the loco at Dumfries but he did not seem impressed. Having thrown everything possible out of the pram he then set out to show the accumulated gathering just what a powerful set of lungs and vocal chords he had been blessed with. Fortunately the loco is now incarcerated in a museum in Glasgow so it’s unlikely it will ever frighten Jimmy again. It MAY have reminded him of lumpy custard or perhaps he was uncomfortable with it running tender first..
